      Founded as an Attic-Ionian city in the 10th century BC, the city once held one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, The Temple of Artemis. Ephesus passed through several hands over the centuries. In 500 BC, Alexander conquered the city by reputation alone. The Persians who held the city, at that time, fled at the mere suggestion that Alexander’s army was on his way.
