      But, enough! We need to get to the city itself. Dates and numbers mean nothing in time compared to walking through it. And statues out of place are no substitute for actually being there.
      First, though, we need to give the van driver the slip. We sneak around the back of the museum, walk a couple of streets, and hail a taxi that will take us to the top of Ephesus. We’re in the clear.
      At the top of the mountain, we pay the driver a few euros, step out of the cab, and we are suddenly on the outskirts of a city that is more than two thousand years old.
